Severe Vomiting

Vomiting can be defined as a forceful expulsion of gastric contents. Severe vomiting can occur in a number of medical conditions like, Cycad poisoning, Cyclic vomiting syndrome, Addison?s disease, One of the types of severe vomiting is cyclic vomiting syndrome. Incidence is equal in both sex can lead to nausea, migraine, indigestion.

Vomiting can be defined as a forceful expulsion of gastric contents. Severe vomiting can occur in a number of medical conditions like -

  • Cycad poisoning
  • Cyclic vomiting syndrome
  • Addison’s disease
  • Brown recluse spider poisoning (found in US only)

Cycad nut are used as a food source as they contains toxic materials so they are first soaked in water to remove the harmful toxic contents. However, sometimes if eaten toxic materials can lead to severe vomiting. In cases of cyclic vomiting syndrome there are spells of severe vomiting may be accompanied with nausea which may last for several days. Previously it was thought that it primarily affects the girls but it has been proved that it affects both sexes equally. There is no particular sex which is affected by the disease more. I some cases it is associated with Migraine. Children are most common victims of the disease but it can start in any age.

Symptoms associated with severe vomiting

  • Nausea
  • Indigestion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Dizziness

Complications

  • Excessive vomiting can result in electrolyte imbalance in body and finally Dehydration
  • Gastric acid can cause injury to esophagus which may lead to development of Oesophagitis
  • Teeth staining can occur due to gastric acid
  • Progression of disease to Migraine

Medical Management

  • As a long term measure lifestyle can be modified to control the vomiting like one can identify the triggers for his/her vomiting. Like some people will vomit after having some particular food like chocolates and cheese.
  • Avoid stress as it can be one of the causes for severe vomiting
  • Some individuals cannot tolerate the hot climate or even heavy exercises so they should take a precaution
  • Don’t go to bed right after having your dinner
  • Take appropriate precautions while travelling
  • Some tricyclic antidepressants like amitryptyline can be helpful in some cases
  • One can use some pain killers like ibuprofen
